Originally this song was written on ukulele, but once that was stolen out of my car along with every other worldly possession I had at the time I had to figure out how to play it on guitar and eventually it called for piano as well... which meant I had to learn piano first. My Mom always wanted to learn piano so I made it a point to have at least one track with piano featured in it, after several retarded transcriptions from guitar to piano I finally figure out how it was supposed to go and viola, Happy New Year was born.
